Dog breeds and behavior

Two studies, two methods

This article compares two recent studies on the link between dog breed and behavior. A 2019 study suggested that around 15% of behavioral differences between breeds could be genetic, but its interpretation was limited by averaged and separate datasets.

A stronger 2022 study

A later study combined individual genetic and behavioral data from purebred, mixed-breed and non-pedigree dogs. It found that behavior has a genetic component of about 25%, while breed explains less than 10% of individual behavioral variation.

Breed is a weak predictor

Behavioral differences inside the same breed are often substantial. Unlike physical traits, breed alone predicts a dog's personality poorly.

Practical implications

The findings invite caution toward stereotypes linking appearance, ancestry and behavior. Individual history, environment and learning remain essential to understanding each dog.
